Wherever you are out in the world sometime.. take a close look at the kinds of “non-professional” visual communication—the kinds of posters or art made by folks like you—out in the public sphere, at the airport, on a walk, while shopping, stuck on a telephone pole, in a window. (Do Not take photos of visuals in your home. Photos must be in a public place.):
- Find at least one very good example, at least one that is mediocre and could have been done better to get the key idea across, and at least one that could be called “ugly” but that caught your attention (hint: sometimes ugly wins!) — Three images in all.*
- Use your phone to get a GOOD image of each. Be careful with windows as you get caught in the reflection and it becomes more of you and less of what you were photographing. Remember to take a picture of the location where the poster is clearly visible.
- Post the three final images — make sure you caption them so I know which is “good”, “bad” and “ugly”. Also post images of the situation where they were taken.
- Write at least 100 words for each explaining:
- where and when you found the image
- what you believe the rhetorical situation is for that poster (Purpose, Audience, Context)
- why the image works or doesn’t (remember, ugly sometimes works)
- what you would do to make it work better,
*Remember what happened when you had the 5 Photos assignment? When you went around “looking” for the specific images, it was frustrating. When you opened up to everything and just took lots of pictures, it was easier. Same principle applies here. Don’t go looking — they are all out there. Open yourself up to a lot of visuals and take lots of photos… then look at them all and pick the best ones for your analysis.
