Prior year’s Interactive Infographic Summary
Spring 2021
My advice would be to develop a organized system that accommodates for all aspects of the class. Make sure you do the sketch participation and if you fall behind make sure you do some token assignments.
Given that I am a senior at RWU, I have a variety of experience with different classes. With this experience I have learned many things to become successful. As it pertains to COMM165, I have found success in numerous ways. To begin, I set up a schedule for this class for when I should have done certain assignments such as readings and blogs. Next, I would recommend anyone to start early on assignments, that way if questions or concerns come up you can reach out to the professor. Lastly, make sure you put enough time into the class and actually do the readings to understand the topics. At the end of the day, you work hard and try your best and you will achieve a better outcome based on the habits I have developed over my 4 years.
If you want to do better in this class, I would say to have good time management skills. When taking this class, I did not expect to do so much drawing and blog work. But over the past few weeks, I’ve been trying manage it and I’m proud to say that I made progress. I would also say to plan your days ahead; whether that’s studying for a test in this class, make a schedule! On getting a good grade in COMM 165, show up to your professor’s office hours and show them that you want to do better and ask them “what can I do better”. Finally, turning your assignments in on time and coming to class on time is key to also getting a good grade!
Time management is a very important factor when taking this class, due to the similar cycle of sketch participations, blogs, and quizzes each week. It is very important to use the videos and chapters given and write down definitions in your notes in order to pass the quizzes. Also, the checklists given for the blogs are very important to look over before you submit the blogs to ensure a pass. My biggest helping strategy is to create emergency alarms on Thursday and Sunday nights at 9 pm to ensure that I remembered to submit my blog or take my vocabulary quiz.
My idea on getting a good grade is just putting in effort to class participation, showing up to class, and actually doing the readings. As long as you are doing what you are supposed to do, you will most likely get the results you wish for. My idea of a good grade is from a B+ to A+, somewhere in that range.
The number one way to do better in COMM 165 is to keep on top of your blog work. Your blog is your best friend and can earn you a lot of points. Even better, make sure you do all of the token posts to get as much credit as possible, so if you ever fall short on an assignment for whatever reason, you have your tokens to fall back on. Most importantly, though, have fun! If you’re not having fun, then you will not be inspired to do the work.
The best way to succeed in this class is to be yourself. I love this class because of the creativity it allows me to display. It tests the many ways in which we perceive the world around us and how anything and everything can be seen in an artistic way. It makes me think about how practicalness is important but can be taken to another level of importance when creativity is involved. My best advice is to talk your time with assignments and not rush the process. When you are struggling do not be afraid to reach out for help either from your professor or fellow peers.
Be different and try to create work that is personal to you. By creating personal projects you are able to do better quality work because you are able to relate it your life.
To succeed in this class, it is necessary to stay on top of your assignments. Along with that participating in class is necessary to understand the information learned from the weekly readings. If you participate and focus on what you should be using in each assignment, then success will come easily. Most importantly, I try to have fun with each assignment and think outside the box forcing myself to think creatively. To get a good grade in this class I would follow all of the above and just have fun with it.
Make sure to be active in class by asking questions and interacting with other students. Also do not be afraid to reach out to Professor Chang, she is super nice and helpful to students. Also make sure to look at every slide in the presentations at the start of the week and watch the videos.
One advice is to pay attention to the slides/blogwork and not worry so much about the participation sketch as the sketches can bring about pressure if you are not a good drawer. My 3 ideas are to listen, practice, and improve to achieve a good grade
To other students that might not be doing so well in the class, DO THE SKETCH PARTICIPATIONS and BLOGWORK, it really helps keep or even bring your grade up just by doing them weekly. Or you can even to extra work to earn tokens !! Its a class that many opportunities are given, so definitely use that to your advantage. My idea of getting a good grade is making sure all my work is in and completed.
I think the most important way to take on this course is with a mindmap. I came into this course thinking I could handle the workload with a simple to-do list but was sorely mistaken when I realized the amount of contemplation and creative brainstorming this class requires. Mindmaps provides a creative and free-flowing structure that displays goals in a similar way to how we work through assignments in class. Wish I learned about them sooner and happy I got to.
Some advice I’d give to other students is to follow the directions carefully and clearly and ask questions if you don’t fully understand how to do something. Another idea of how to get good grades in Comm165 is to look at what your fellow classmates are doing and compare it to your own work.
I think my advice to other students would be to really pay attention when other students are sharing their sketch participation. It is helpful because they point out what they learned from the presentations and how they incorporated it into their drawings. Professor also gives really good feedback about everyones work. I would also do my best to incorporate everything you learned that week into your blog post. The best way to learn the material is by putting it into practice.
As someone who is personally having a bit of difficulty in the class, the most important thing is to keep up with your work. Doing the class participation and blogs and quizzes will keep you from tanking. And if you are struggling, be honest with yourself. Maybe it is because of outside forces or just lack of time, but whatever it is, consult the professor and work it out.
Just keep up with the work and don’t fall behind.
In this class, my advice would be to do your sketches and class participation early. I learned the hard way how hard it is to draw and write everything a few hours before class. In COMM165, you need to be able to plan and follow the time suggestions. I also think that talking to Professor Chang if you are lost is vital. As long as you communicate with the professor, you should be able to hop back on track in class.
Being that I am always trying to get tokens, and you give chances to offer those tokens, I think the best way to do better in class is to take advantage of those tokens. Why not take advantage of such a nice gesture? I think the early bird tokens and getting our blogs done before class Monday, and having a chance to redo those by Thursday, will also help students get better grades. It also helps me keep track of my work. I try and do the blogs the day you email them out and the following day so that I dont forget about them and I can sit down and spend quality time working on them. My ideas have been working for me so far, and I also think emailing you with any questions, like I have done in the past, really helps me in the long run.
Some advice that I would give to other students is to read the books and memorize the vocab as you would in any other class, but I further challenge people to go outside of their comfort zone with their creativity. I have done this since joining COMM165 and it has allowed me to discover creative aspects of my brain that I didn’t know were there before. As far as getting a good grade, allow yourself to be creative in your sketch participations and blogs, and that creativity and persistence will speak for itself.
Don’t wait last minute to do blog posts. Always show up to class whenever possible. Especially do plenty of token posts to make up for any missed assignments. Just by doing a few can make up a lot of not passed grades.
I would take as many notes as possible. By taking more notes and understand each power point, it will help you a lot with understand the blog posts and the quizzes. If you want to do better in class, I would also put a lot more effort and time into completing the blog posts because they can be tricky at the beginning, but I have found that practice makes perfect for them. Not everyone is an amazing artists, but you will be surprised what you can come up with by just doing it and practicing over and over again.
Fall 2020
Make sure to do the class participation every class and spend a quality amount of time on blog posts to submit good work. Also do tokens if you are behind.
one way to do better in this class is simply to just ask questions- there is no “wrong” question. If your confused and you want to better just ask, it doesn’t hurt
In order to be successful in this course, it is simply essential to do the reading (and the slideshows) and to actually engage. Try out the experiments suggested to you, participate in creativity discussions, and just be yourself!
I believe students can do better in this class by viewing the slides and lectures on the comm165 website. Drawing is a great way to get rid of stress, on a student’s free time they can draw using gestalts principles or principles they had a hard time understanding in class. I say this because everyone learns differently, a visual learner can understand class material by drawing, while other learners can obtain information through the lecture slides.
I think a great piece of advice to other students to just have fun with the class and take each assignment seriously and creatively. Having lacking artistic ability my entire life, that doesn’t mean I can’t have fun with the class and be satisfied with a drawing that is obviously not as good as some really good art in the class. I try my hardest and even though art is especially up my alley, I still like to take advantage of how fun this class can really be and learn as much as possible
The advice if how to do better in class is to participate in the class often. Try to raise your hands, say your opinion, and share your thoughts with classmates. It is always important to know the materials and by speaking in front of others will acquire the knowledge of communication skills.
Do not worry about your artistic ability. Focus on making your point than making something look “good”. Apply yourself and learn techniques to help you become a better artist. You may be bad at drawing now but you really will never get better unless you practice.
The advice I would give to other students about how to do better in the class are paying attention each week to the concepts and vocabulary. I think doing this could help a person better complete a blogwork by being able to effectively complete blogwork.
Let the pressure go and create the best piece of art you can!
Do all of your work, watch every video, when you can get all of the token assignments done for extra credit, and really be passionate about what your learning about because it is very interesting and cool stuff.
I think the biggest thing is the plan it out, everything from day one is labeled out when its due and if you follow those due dates you will never fall behind and just do your best work honestly. I think a planner or agenda book of when blog post or quizzes are due would have been my ticket to success in thgis course.
I think that students will excel in this class if they make quizlets to study vocabulary, do their readings, and watch the presentations provided online. These all help to really learn the material and understand the concepts we discuss in class. I would also recommend that for our drawing homework and blogs, to have fun and be creative. These assignments are a great way to let our creative energy, and it’s more fun when I take out the stress and try to do something lighthearted and fun for the assignment. Embrace the fact that we get to draw for homework!
My best advice to students looking to improve their grades should read the lectures before each class and takes notes so when you’re actually in class you already know what’s being discussed and there are no surprises. You should also make sure to study for each and quiz and complete each blog according to the instructions for each one. Each student should also make sure they are able to contact professor Chang with any questions so you’re not left feeling lost and fall behind on the work load.
“Students in this class need to do the readings. The readings are full of vocabulary and also apply the vocabulary. I would not have been able to do so well on the quizzes if I did not do the reading, take notes, and define vocabulary as I went.
Additionally, students should really do the sketch participation! They are fun! They do not have to be crazy complex pieces of art, but rather they are meant to take what you have learned in the readings and PowerPoint and apply it. This gives you a chance to experiment with the principles themselves. It is a great creative break that reinforces what you are learning. “
I believe that is important to go through the powerpoints before class as they really do help clarify a lot of things that are going on in the class. Also, it is important to make sure to do the homework as it does help you understand concepts and they are a decent part of your grade. Also, reading the books and making sure you understand what you are reading is crucial to this class.
My biggest advice is to have good time management so that you have enough time to make a great blog.
In order to do better in this class, I would encourage the other students to review the powerpoints and the videos provided on the comm165 website, in order to gain more knowledge in each lesson, and get improved scores on their quizzes.
To do better in class what helps me is putting all other electronics some where else so you have no distractions. Also I like to have fun with each participation assignment and not make it seem like homework. I like to do a sketch and later come back and see what I should add, this goes for blog posts as well.
I think just reading all the blog guidelines and putting the most effort in to them as that is how you will get your best results. Also understanding the readings and looking over the power points can make it a better experience that leads to success. Also I would recommend myself and others to be as creative as possible in all work as that we can show you as a professor what we enjoy and take away from the class.
In my opinion, to do the best in this class is to use colors in your artwork! Instead of pens and pencils that are prominent in the piece, use markers and colored pencils to give a vibrant, fun, popping look! It makes your work look less washed out.
Read over all vocabulary and make notes. Pay attention to all items in the checklists for the blogs, before doing them. Have fun with creating, and make what you draw unique and personalized, all while displaying concepts learned from class. Have fun with it! Never be afraid to ask for help or further clarification.
Looking through the posted slides is helpful before you do the readings in the textbooks. Paying attention to everyone’s class participation helps drill terms and techniques into your brain, as you are seeing them repeated multiple times. Dedicate time to looking at the slides, doing the readings, taking the quizzes, and doing blog posts as these are all practice for learning class information.
My advice for others to do well in class is to keep up on all the readings. This is challenging because there are 3 different sources. But it is very important for vocab quizzes, class participation, and our weekly blog posts. It is best to keep notes for each source so you stay organized.
I think that putting in a lot of effort into the blog work posts is a big way to do better in this class. I have received 4 tokens and I think that is because I put a lot of time and effort into my blog work posts because I want to do the best I can for each assignment.
I think time management is key for this class. Doing the assignments–which happen consistently each week–on time will help students not feel overwhelmed by the variety of assignments. Students must also keep up with the readings and really try to understand the concepts associated with the vocabulary words. And always, remember to have fun!
A way to do better in this class is to try your hardest when drawing and always use as much detail and color as possible in your drawings. Even if you are not the best artist, as long as you give effort and try to be detailed, you can perform well in this class.
My biggest advice is be willing to express yourself and be creative, and have fun with what you are doing. I went into this class hesitant because I do not consider myself an “artist” but as I do the homework’s, and class participation, I tend to enjoy it more and more, and want to get better at what I am doing.
If you want to do better in the class try to do the reading well ahead of time so you have time to come up with questions to ask during class. Put a good amount of time into your participation sketches because it will only help you understand the concepts better.
I would recommend to a student that following each quiz, they make flashcards based on the terms in that quiz. This way, when the cumulative exam comes along, the flashcards are made. Then, in order to solidify the terms, copy them down onto a piece of paper, because writing helps solidify information. Also, using Mind Maps and the tools we are learning about to help you learn more, is important because they are important memory and comprehension tools, adding excitement and visual appeal to the learning process, helping you solidify the concepts in order to visually express them, and it provides a lasting visual of the concepts. I find that when taking notes, I often write down too many terms and it becomes overwhelming and the goal is not to copy the entire textbook. The benefit of using Mind Maps and other visual forms, is that you must organize your thoughts into categories and you must not use wordiness, meaning you will not be copying down more information than needed and it will be easier to remember. Also, start your idea-forming process early in the week or the week before, so that when the blog posts are due, you are not scrambling for an idea but simply revising one already formed and drawn out, with thought put into it, which contributes to the fun aspect as well, and also allows you time to explain your process, because there was an actual process to begin with. Overall use visual tools and let the class be fun. Do not think of the assignments as a chore because sometimes I had no ideas but when I let them flow and had fun with it, I found I had more than the required amount of ideas.
Experiment with your participation and blogwork assignments. Try things with them you have never done before just to see if they could work. Don’t overthink them, I’ve done my best assignments by just forcing myself to draw.
A way to do better in the class is to manage your time. Don’t leave the blog post due until the last minute. If you are rushing to finish the work, it is not going to be done very well. Create a plan over a few days to make sure that you have plenty of time to do the work.
The best way to succeed in this class is to really try and put in the effort to doing work on multiple days. If you do the quizzes on Sundays, sometimes it is better to relook at the in class assignment on Monday rather than doing everything in one day. This is because it lets your mind adjust to what you learned one day and apply it on another which helps you better understand it better and incorporate into your memory more. Also a simple thing to do is just try and have fun with what you are doing. When we enjoy what we are doing and can connect with it we tend to get a lot more out of it and remember it more than if we just force ourselves to get through it. I also think putting in the extra work and effort is very beneficial as getting the tokens for these things definitely helps for a week when you may just be too busy to do what you need to do for class or a quiz that day. You never know when you may need that extra credit.
Try to start the blog work earlier as we get it a week in advance, and could even get extra credit tokens by doing it over the weekend if we need the extra points. Also, follow the checklist before submitting the blog, or even starting it on the Comm165 website because it has saved me a few times.
