Tip: read the entire post and checklist before starting!
Overview: Create a blog for this class. Then make an original image in your sketchbook and post it in your blog. Then write a short blog post describing what is interesting about your visual. Follow the process instructions, including the timing.
Process Instructions:
- Think of an image to fill up a sketchbook page, note down these ideas or make thumbnail sketches (10 minutes). These are drafts of ideas you might use.
- Take a 10 minute rest away from the sketchbook and come back to your sketchbook to select and refine the ideas. Decide on what ideas to use, and how to arrange it on your sketchbook page. Design an image that is big enough to fill up the page.
- Finally, create your hand-drawn artwork in your sketchbook. It may help to use light pencil marks and rulers to create a neat layout. Outline your work in vibrant/dark colors. Take two pictures, one of the full image and one of a detail. Write your blog post, reflecting on your design choices. Submit the survey form below.
Blog guidelines (You need a blog):
- Create a personal portfolio blog. Post images of your solution along with a 250+ word memo based on the question prompts below. See the walkthrough or help post on how to create your free WordPress blog if needed. If you are adding to an existing blog, please create a new category called “COMM165” and file your posts under this category.
- Please title your blog something that identifies your name (e.g. username or first and name initial) so it is easily recognizable. Feel free to choose a theme you like.
- Make sure your blog timezone is set to New York.
- Enable comments on your blog so that you can receive a comment grade.
Image guidelines (draw a good picture):
- An original image created by hand in your sketchbook.
- Sign and date the bottom with your signature.
- The image must fill up most of the page (be larger than 10″x10″).
- Layout using light pencil marks, a ruler might help. Then, finish off with bright markers.
Question prompts for the memo. You must answer at least some of theses questions:
- What was your design process for coming up with the idea?
- Why did you pick the detail image?
- Why did you choose these particular colors (if any)?
- What inspired you? What message do you intend to convey?
- What would you alter/do if you had more time?
- What did you choose not to include? What did not work out?
- Show your work to someone not in this class. What is their reaction or comment?
Blog post guidelines:
- Post at least 2 images— one full image of the drawing, another of a detail.
- All images should be appropriately hi-resolution (larger than 1024 x 768 pixels), fully visible, oriented correctly, straight (not skewed), with even lighting. Try using a scanner app like Apple Notes.
- If using your blog for more than one course, posts should be categorized as COMM165
- All posts must be published by the deadline (see Schedule). No late posts will be accepted.
- Do you have 250+ words in your blog post? Bullet points memos should answer at least some of the prompt questions. Spelling and grammar count!
- All work must be original. Properly cite quotes or references using APA citation style
