11-0 Data and Visualizations

Dear Students,

On Monday, we have a guest speaker, Dr. Karen Donoghue from HumanLogic. She runs a successful design consultancy. She has worked with Google, VMware, T-Mobile, The Associated Press, Motorola, and many startups. Her software and products run on many mobile platforms. Come learn about her work creating products using many of the visual communication techniques we have learned about in class.

For the Class Participation, she’s posed a design problem asking for ideas on ways to demonstrate confidence or reliability in a number. Download LocalHaze (or watch some video demos) and browse through the air quality in different places. Look at the confidence rating for each sensor reading. The confidence rating depends on many factors, including sensor maintenance and data freshness. Currently, the app uses contrast and a small icon to show reliability. If a sensor is less reliable, that sensor name will display a low contrast. How might you change this indicator to be more intuitive? You can use colors, words, symbols, or something else… feel free to be creative in how to show reliability.

Upload your suggestions to the photo album. Feel free to use hand-drawn sketches or computer tools (Slides or marvelapp, etc.).

For tokens, you can ask her questions during the Q&A session. You can ask her about her designs, opinions, or career. She has spoken at many other design schools, including CMU, Tufts, and Northeastern so is familiar with questions students might ask. You’ll need to submit a token request (form below), because I may have trouble logging who asked what. I will send an updated Google Meet link that includes Dr. Donaghue, but it will be the same link for all of us. See you on Monday @5:;25pm for class logistics, with the talk beginning at 6pm!
